CINEMETRICS – BEAUTIFUL MOVIE MATH

I stumbled across this interesting info-graphics style graduation project titled Cinemetrics, created by Frederic Brodbeck while attending the Royal Academy of Arts. A cinemetric is essentially a fingerprint or signature which can illustrate various characteristics of a movie, making it easy to then compare and contrast one with the other.

Brodbeck’s software produces the cinemetric by using information gathered from a film’s DVD related to the editing structure, a scene’s colour palette, speech(sub-title tracks) or motion and transforms them into graphical representations, allowing the reviewer to see the complete holistic view of a movie and easily interpret the style or compare differences between, genres, remakes and directors.

In the video you can see how the films of Wes Anderson compare over the years, or see how the three films 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Solaris compare within the Sci-Fi genre. Your eyes immediately interpret the graphic’s dynamic movement to illustrate how the action packed scenes in Alien are in complete contrast with Kubrick’s slow moving 2001. It’s not difficult to imagine how this tool could become useful for movie executives who may decide, one day, to gleam the signature of a successful film and try to replicate it in an effort to evoke the same response from an audience. Or better yet, compare and contrast successful trailers to find the perfect pace and timing to maximize impact on the cinema-going public. On a lighter note, I wouldn’t be all that surprised to find out that all Adam Sandler produced films show very little variation between cinemetric signatures and contain regular product placement point.
